Goal: Engage with traditional humanities in a new way using new technology, tell the story of I-81’s construction and its longstanding effects on minority communities in Syracuse, NY.
The plan: Develop a multimedia map highlighting arrests and their locations, first-person accounts, and draw a narrative connection between the highway’s construction and current arrest practices.
The result: A lifelong hyperfixation on the Federal Highway Act of 1956 and its effects on poor communities across the US. Also carpal tunnel from hours of manual data entry.
